Reading this was a little bit like skimming a Tumblr circa 1968. I liked the concept--the idea of a collage of Boyds thoughts, experiences, and correspondence interspersed with excerpts of poems, novels, and contemporary journalism to create an unusual lectionary--but the experience of the book itself was disorienting and oddly dissatisfying. At its worst, it was overly self-conscious. I did, however, get a lot out of reading the parts that illuminated the 1950s-1960s era civil rights and anti-war movements in the United States. My indignation was kindled long before my intellect caught up.

My intellect kept busy for a long time when my conscience remained conveniently dormant. I did not have to commit myself at all. Then, indignation, intellect, conscience and commitment finally had a head-on collision while I was sitting on a freedom ride bus. We learn more from experience than from anything else. All the thought and moral processes that went into my boarding the freedom ride bus were not nearly so important as just my being on it.
